‘How Does Reading Great Literature Shape Us?’ is the theme of this season’s last online talk of the Literary Conversations Across Borders Series.
“Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another’s skin, another’s voice, another’s soul.” Joyce Carol Oates
Reading literature allows us to see the world through the eyes of others, to understand alternative points of view. It can take us on a compelling journey, enabling us to set aside personal perspectives and truly cross borders by feeling the emotions and experiencing the life of someone who is of another age, class, or race. It nourishes our brains, influences our thinking and can leave an impression that may last a lifetime.
